The Legislature's Joint Committee on Education recently approved a bill to make a small but important change to the 2010 education reform law that would help charters obtain school facilities. The legislation would change only one word. Rather than state that school districts "may" make unused buildings available for lease or purchase to charter public schools, the legislation says districts "shall" make them available.
This essentially gives charters first crack at unused buildings. The bill has a long way to go in the legislative process but getting a favorable recommendation from the Committee is a good sign.
